Well here it is. Writing a blog has been on my to-do list for a while so here it is. Not very good as I have no idea what I’m doing but hopefully you’ll bear with me while I learn.
I’ve been knitting since I was 5, taught by a very patient eldest sister. I enjoyed knitting but beyond toys and clothes for my dolls, I wasn’t very adventurous. This continued through the next 30 years, I knit while pregnant, delighting in the cute little items but once the kids were past 6 months, I knew I wouldn’t have the patience for anything bigger.
Crochet never appealed to me, it seemed complicated and only suitable for doilies and super fussy baby bonnets, but in late 2014, I started to join several social media craft groups. Suddenly, I was seeing fabulous toys and dresses and hats. All made with that funny hook thing. One night I decided, I would learn to crochet. I could have gone down the “learn a chain, then a double crochet, then a ….” road, but like I’ve already said, I’m impatient, so I scrolled to a video of a cute girls dress that had “easy” in the title and I followed it. OMG!!! Where had crochet been for the last 30 years of my life? By night two, my dress was finished. It wasn’t at all complicated like I thought, and it was so quick!! By the end of week one, I had the dress and a cardigan and hat for my then three year old. And that was that, I was hooked, pardon the pun.
Don’t get me wrong, I still believe some things are better knit than crocheted but given the choice now, I’d rather crochet. I enjoy knitting toys but would rather barbecue my own legs than sew them up. Amigurumi takes a lot of that sewing up away and crochet, to me, makes sense. It’s more logical in how it works and how to shape things and I’ve even dabbled in pattern writing but it is very early days.
So, this reluctant, somewhat lazy and easily distracted knitter, became a very avid crocheter. My yarn stash could circle the world 1000 times over and I pray my other half never ever tries to open my wardrobe….or the kids’ wardrobe….or the press under the stairs…or the boot of my car….or……..
Hee hee, I know you all get it!
